Foolproof French Dip Sandwiches

With the next school year rapidly (sigh) approaching, I am starting to gather some of my easiest, fastest recipes. I call these French Dip Sandwiches “Foolproof” because they truly are… and even better? They use 4 ingredients and take approximately 20 minutes to get onto the dinner table. It takes longer to decide what type of pizza to order than to throw these together!

I love a good French dip. It’s become my cop out at a restaurant when I don’t know what to order. I’ve tried a few slow cooker versions that are delicious, but some days even remembering to throw something in the crockpot before speeding off to work feels impossible. This recipe is also a winner for picky eaters who may not like the mushrooms and onions that are often part of those homemade French dip recipes.

Finally, I’ve said it before and will say it again: If you often cook dishes that need a small side of dipping sauce or, like these sandwiches, au jus, then you must invest in a set of ceramic ramekin dishes. I posted a link below to my favorite set that I use at least weekly, if not multiple times per week. This post includes affiliate links to products like these for which I may make a small commission at no extra cost to you, should you make a purchase.

Even if you’re still a beginner and not up to our “Average” status just yet, no worries! These sandwiches will make you look and feel like a pro in no time.

Foolproof French Dip Sandwiches

Serves 4-6

Estimated time, start to serve: 20 minutes

Ingredients:

  • Package of 6 brat or hoagie buns

  • 6 slices of provolone cheese (swiss or mozzarella work well in a pinch, too)

  • 1 packet of au jus sauce mix

  • ⅔ lb. (give or take) of deli-sliced roast beef; if your meat counter has medium or medium-rare, then opt for that variety since we will be cooking it somewhat further

Instructions:

1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.

2. While the oven is preheating, whisk together the au jus in a small saucepan and prepare it according to its package directions. Once prepared, turn the temperature of that burner to low.

3. Place your roast beef in the pot of au jus. Cover.

4. In the meantime, slice the buns and place them on a baking sheet. Tear each slice of cheese in half and lay the halves side-by-side on one half of the bun so that the entire length of one side of the bun is covered.

5. Bake the buns for approximately 5 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the bun is beginning to crisp up.

6. Using tongs or something similar, top the buns with roast beef, letting as much au jus drip off as possible beforehand.

7. Pour remaining au jus into mini ramekin dishes like these for easy dipping. Cut the sandwiches in half at an angle.

8. Enjoy! We had our French dips with a side of grapes, though some French fries would have taken them to a whole other level!
